Despite being born into slavery he taught himself to read as a teenager. He later escaped slavery and proceeded to become an internationally recognized public speaker, writer, abolitionist, defender of women's rights, and presidential advisor. He died on February 20, 1895.

Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887 in Jamaica. While in Jamaica he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). He later moved to America where he grew the UNIA to be the largest Black empowerment movement of the twentieth century. After his death on June 10, 1940, he was named Jamaica's first national hero.

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery on a farm in Ulster County, New York in 1797. She escaped to freedom in 1826 and even though she never learned to read or write she became an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. She died on November 26, 1883 at the age of 86.

Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. are two of the world's most revered political activists. The two met face to face for the first time on March 26, 1964, in Washington, D.C. when attending a U.S. Senate debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Although they did not always see eye to eye, they both sacrificed their lives for equal rights and justice for black people in America.
