Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887 in Jamaica. While in Jamaica he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). He later moved to America where he grew the UNIA to be the largest Black empowerment movement of the twentieth century. After his death on June 10, 1940, he was named Jamaica's first national hero.
