Gilbert also wrote stories based on his life, including the biographical "My Maiden Brief" and "The Lady in the Plaid Shawl", fantastic fairy stories, and thoughtful short stories, as "Jones' VIctoria Cross" and "Diamonds", here included.

Sir William S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) collaborated on a series of popular operettas, many of which are still performed today.
