This collection contains materials collected by Jan Voogt while conducting research for his dissertation which focuses on reaction to the Vietnam War in the town of Brownsville, Tenn. There are Voogt's personal interviews with 53 individuals about their personal experiences during the war. There are also photocopies of articles from the Brownsvill newspaper, the States-Graphic, reflecting local coverage of the war.

GDOT (Georgia Department of Transportation) engineers and other transportation professionals regularly require a variety of data that describe the conditions of the roadway infrastructure to support a variety of operations such as planning, design and maintenance. The ability to collect data cost effectively through the use of smartphone for example couple make them more efficient in conducting many of these operations through earlier notification at reduced costs. In this work it is shown that it is possible to gather much of the needed data and with the appropriate tools to aid in analysis it could prove useful in many GDOT operations. Using accelerometer data, it is shown that there are correlations between IRI (International Roughness Index) and PACES (Pavement Condition Evaluation System) data which are tools currently used for some GDOT operations. Evaluation of roadway acceleration profiles as the vehicle is driving could also provide feedback on the performance of the roadway design. The current generation of smartphones also provides the ability to estimate the geometrics of roadway segments that could be useful in matching design to specifications as an example and also to evaluate the ride from roadways using measures that compare directly to what drivers experience. Through the estimate of Whole Body Vibrations (WBV) techniques for assessing the effectiveness of control devices such as rumble strips could be developed that tie to the human hearing and vibratory impact experienced by the passengers. It is also shown that normalization techniques could be used to account for the effects of different vehicles and mounting types.
