No Middle Ground
Osborn's letters detail the role of the 1st NY Light Artillery in the battles of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Chattanooga. After enlisting at Watertown, NY, Osborn, who later rose to command of the 11th Corps artillery, recruited men for Battery D from Jefferson, St. Lawrence, and Lewis Counties, NY. His observations on command decisions and generalship are insightful as are his appraisals of McClellan, Hooker, Sherman, and Grant. The editors' chapter introductions provide context and historical perspective. Fully annotated and indexed.
