This is an autobiography in painted form. It's an American story, that of a child of hard-working immigrants from Europe who begins life in Brooklyn, New York, and winds up in Oakland, California. Along the way he grows up and graduates from high school, serves in WWII, returns and attends college on the GI Bill. Early in life he marries his high school sweetheart, graduates from college, and realizes his dream of working as an artist. Here are the moments in the life of an attentive and patient man, those highlights and low-lights of a life spent painting, learning, teaching, loving and raising a family.

One of the greatest maritime salvage operations in US history took place for three years after the devastating attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Raising the Fleet follows the operation on each ship sunk or damaged from refloating to moderate to intensive repairs to putting the ships back into the fleet, with hundreds of period photographs and extensive captions. The three ships not salvaged, the USS Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah are also covered. Thousands of naval and civilian personnel worked on the ships, including over 20,000 hours of underwater diving. The authors have used Vice Admiral Homer N. Wallin�s book, Pearl Harbor, Why, How, Fleet Salvage and Final Appraisal for most of the text. A full-color chapter includes the results of an extensive nationwide search for remaining artifacts of the ships that are on display.

Situated at the head of Lynn Canal are two sites of much importance to the history of the Kondike Gold Rush, one of the greatest adventures North America has known. At the mounth of the Taiya River is the abandoned site of Dyea, once the gateway to the Chilkoot Trail and the water route to the interior of the Yukon. Four miles to the southeast of Dyea, at the mouth of the Skagway River, lies the other major gateway to the goldfields by way of the White Pass Trail�Skagway. The early history of these two towns in interrelated but today they are vastly different. Dyea has gone the way of the gold rush towns of the late 2800s and early 1900s�it has crumbled to the dust from which it sprang in 1897. Skagway has fared better, and along with Dawson City and a few other remains, it represents the last vestiges of the gold rush.
