En los últimos años, en el Ecuador se habla de igualdad de condiciones entre mujeres y hombres de todas las culturas y nacionalidades. Sin embargo, la situación de desigualdad persiste: las mujeres siguen siendo marginadas, vulneradas en sus derechos y con pocas oportunidades para estudiar. Este es el caso de muchas mujeres indígenas de contextos rurales de la Sierra centro y norte del país. En las siguientes páginas, las graduadas de la Carrera de Educación Intercultural Bilingüe de la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, nos cuentan cómo lucharon para poder estudiar y obtener su título de tercer nivel. Así, según relatan, para ellas ha sido bastante difícil educarse por su condición de mujeres e indígenas, de madres y por la pobreza y exclusión en que vivían. La presente obra representa un esfuerzo de los médicos, psicólogos, estudiantes, becarios y enfermeras que trabajan diariamente en el área de los cuidados paliativos, el alivio del dolor y el control de síntomas del Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Guadalajara, cuya sede del programa de la especialidad de Medicina Paliativa actualmente se imparte en el Hospital General de Occidente el Instituto Jalisciense de Alivio del Dolor y Cuidados Paliativos, el Hospital Civil Fray Antonio Alcalde y el Nuevo Hospital Juan I. Menchaca. El lema del primero es "Aliviar el dolor del pobre" y el de los hospitales civiles es " A la humanidad doliente", coincidentes con el sentido de la presente obra. Este documento es una revisión más profunda de aspectos actuales sobre temas complejos bioéticos, sensibles y humanos, donde el abordaje es difícil en los procesos de formación de pregrado y posgrado, de ahí la oportunidad de aportar a la formación del personal de salud, el cual podrá encontrar además de definiciones, dosis, y referencias bibliográficas, elementos útiles para quienes se enfrentan todos los días al dolor y al sufrimiento de la fase avanzada y sus síntomas. Asimismo, el libro será un aliado para los estudiantes de las diferentes áreas de la salud por el contenido de fácil comprensión, donde los obstáculos normalmente encontrados respecto a mitos sobre el uso de morfina, por ejemplo, son cubiertos con información sobre los efectos adversos e indicaciones; de este modo, el lector hallará en formato de consulta práctica temas que normalmente se encuentran dispersos en diferentes libros.
