Eating Culture
Presenting a scholarly multi-course perspective on one of life's main occupations, 22 diverse contributors--from philosophy professors to the restaurant critic for the Village Voice-- approach the Rorschach of eating. Themes include: hunger as ideology, eating and AIDS in gay men's culture, the onus of eating out by oneself, the relationship between eating and sensuality, performance art as "feeding" an audience, the primal pan of soul food, myths about consumption, and the cultural role of Bubbie's challah. Bandw photos of food-related avant garde art and history reinforce the complexity of the topic. No index. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
