Toward Living Well with Less
Roger Ulrich was born in 1931. This volume includes memories of his boyhood years in Eureka, Illinois, doing chores on his Amish-Mennonite grandfather’s farm during the Great Depression, going to school during World War II, and then attending college and graduate school (Ph.D. in Psychology). Other writings, letters and interviews trace his long career from psychology professor and administrator to research professor, and circle back again to farm life: in 1971, Roger helped found an experimental community first prompted by B.F. Skinner’s Walden Two, which evolved into the Lake Village Homestead Farm family that exists today on the outskirts of Kalamazoo, Michigan. There he has spent four decades, joining his efforts with others toward the goal of a return to a much simpler life rooted in respect for the environment and living well with less. In the process, Roger has become firmly convinced that his granddad and distant Amish relations were a lot smarter than our modern educational system has led us to believe.
