The Complaint, Or, Night-thoughts on Life, Death & Immortality
The Miltonian-scale long poem by Edward Young, with watercolour illustrations by William Blake. This was a huge, several-years' (1795-1797) undertaking for Blake who eventually produced 537 beautiful illustrations, of which only 43 were used in the original printing. Others were added to later editions, and exhibitions of Blake's work over the centuries introduced still others to the world, but this 2005 production from the Folio Society is the first-ever complete facsimile edition of what Blake and Young set out to present, with nearly 500 watercolours appearing (in color and positioned exactly as intended) for the first time.
