Translation and the Spanish Empire in the Americas
Translation and the Spanish Empire in the Americas
Two are the starting points of this book. On the one hand, the use of Doña Marina/La Malinche as a symbol of the violation of the Americas by the Spanish conquerors as well as a metaphor of her treason to the Mexican people. On the other, the role of the translations of Bartolomé de las Casas’s Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias in the creation and expansion of the Spanish Black Legend. The author aims to go beyond them by considering the role of translators and interpreters during the early colonial period in Spanish America and by looking at the translations of the Spanish chronicles as instrumental in the promotion of other European empires. The book discusses literary, religious and administrative documents and engages in a dialogue with other disciplines that can provide a more nuanced view of the role of translation, and of the mediators, during the controversial encounter/clash between Europeans and Amerindians.

News as Changing Texts
News as Changing Texts
The updated and revised edition of this volume maintains its focus on the dialectic interrelation between ‘news’ and ‘change’. News is intended as a textual type in its evolutionary – and revolutionary – development, while change is discussed with reference to the form, content and structure of news texts. The news texts in question range from the first forms of periodical news in the seventeenth century up to the news blogs and social media of the present day. Divided into four chapters, representing key historical moments in the process of news writing, each chapter makes use of a set of corpora specifically designed to suit the needs of scholars working in those particular fields. Topics that the authors examine include pronominal usage and the interrelationship between news writer and reader, heads and headlines, the language of advertisements and other text classes, the trend towards conversationalization, and impartiality and ‘perspective’ in modern-day news. These and other topics, coupled with the varying corpora that are exploited to analyse them, call into question basic methodological issues that are examined from different perspectives. Throughout the volume, the authors contextualise the news publications of the day so as to better understand the continuous process of adjustment and renewal that news texts are subject to over time.

Abstract Alfonso Moure has been one of the most outstanding figures of the Spanish Archaeology of the last fifty years. His field work projects on the Palaeolithic, particularly on rock and portable art, constitute a milestone in the modernization of the Archaeological research in Spain. Not less important has been his contribution as a professor, and in the management and outreach of Archaeological heritage, to which he devoted a large part of his efforts from his chairs at the Universities of Valladolid and Cantabria, or from the diverse management positions that he occupied at the University or at institutions such as the Spanish National Archaeological Museum. This volume brings together papers on the topics that he addressed along his intense and fruitful career. They have been offered by a selected group of colleagues -many of them his collaborators or students- who, this way, would like to pay tribute to this outstanding prehistorian. Many of them deal with the Palaeolithic rock and portable art, about which chapters are included on particular sites or items and their context (those by Robert Ontañón and collaborators on La Brazada, by Valentín Villaverde, Ana Cantó and Miriam Cabrelles on a plaquette from El Parpalló, by Pilar Utrilla, Carlos Mazo, Rafael Domingo and Manuel Bea on the block 1 from Abauntz, and by Rodrigo de Balbín and Javier Alcolea on Tito Bustillo), but also on general issues, such as Gonzalo Ruiz Zapatero's reflections on the interpretations and the outreach of Palaeolihtic art, Eduardo Palacio's on the role of Social Anthropology in the building of hypothesis on its meaning, and Denis Vialou's on the complexity of interpretations after the perspective changes of the last years. There are also contributions on the Palaeolithic of several regions (Mikel Díaz and Ramón Fábregas' synthesis on Galicia, and Álvaro Arrizabalaga's and colleagues on the Gravettian of the Basque Country) or of particular sites (Manuel Santonja and colleague on the Acheulean deposit of El Sotillo, and Lawrence Guy Straus and Manuel R. González Morales on the Lower Magdalenian of El Mirón), as well of chapters from an Archaeozoological (Esteban Álvarez, Teresa Aparicio and Marián Cueto on the Mousterian layers of Las Grajas) or Taphonomic (Edgard Camarós on the splachnocranium attributed to the Magdalenian of El Pendo) perspectives. There are also chapters on the Mesolithic (Diego Herrero, Natividad Fuertes, Ana Neira, Antonio Tarriño and Federico Bernaldo de Quirós on the management of lithics in the Leon side of the Cantabrian range), and on diverse questions of late Prehistory (Rodrigo Villalobos, Germán Delibes, Miguel Moreno, Javier Basconcillos and Alberto Fraile on the menhirs in the provinces of Burgos and Palencia; Ángel Armendariz and Ignacio Montero on the bronze axe of Las Praízas; Ernesto García-Soto and Susana Ferrero on the Celtiberian hillfort Castilviejo). The book ends with a contribution on a topic on which Alfonso Moure was particularly concerned: preventive Archaeology, to which María Ángeles Querol devotes a chapter. Let this volume be a reminder and a tribute to a great archaeologist, but also to a great friend, colleague and master of those who have participated in it.

Ciudades y corona.
Abstract Studies about the city, political representation, taxation and the government of the monarchy have reached a central importance in the renewal of modernist historiography. The advances experienced in these lines of research in the last forty years have allowed us to improve our knowledge of the social and political dynamics experienced by European states, as well as the changes in the forms of action of governments when facing new and each increasingly complex challenges of all kinds. The works that are collected in this volume delve into these lines while reviewing some of the previous approaches and proposing new hypotheses about the fiscal system of the monarchy and urban economies, also paying attention to the tensions that are generated in urban areas, their political expression in courts and parliaments, the transformations in festive expressions, symbols and other forms of representation of the city.
