Royal Navy Lieutenant St. Vincent Halfhyde is assigned as second-in-command of the heavy cruiser Viceroy and ordered to a volcanic island that has recently surfaced in the north Pacific. The Admiralty hopes to claim the island for the Crown and establish an outpost there, but the hostile Russians have other ideas and the wily Japanese are prepared to carry out their own agenda.

Lt. Donald Cameron thought himself inured to the unremitting rigors of the wartime Navy until he joined the destroyer Burnside in one of the most important convoys of 1942. Defense and civilian suppliers, liners crammed with soldiers, and a tanker filled with highly flammable aviation fuel made up the massive convoy bound for the besieged island of Malta, with a full complement of aircraft carriers and warships to protect it. Having suffered few losses before reaching Gibraltar, morale on the Burnside was ostentatiously high -- though the chances of reaching Malta unscathed were minimal.
