Gerade wegen ihrer scheinbaren Bedeutungslosigkeit eignet sich die Burgenlandfrage für eine Charakterisierung der ungarischen Revisionsbestrebungen der Zwischenkriegszeit. Herrschte auf Regierungsebene ein stillschweigender Konsens bezüglich der Aussparung des Problems vor, gingen von lokaler Ebene Bedrohungsmomente aus, die im Alltagsleben beiderseits der Grenzen zu einer tiefen Verunsicherung führten und 1927/28 die latenten Spannungen offen eskalieren ließen. Auf bilateraler Ebene erfolgte Ende 1928 zwar eine Darlegung der beiden divergierenden Standpunkte. Die Folgen der Weltwirtschaftskrise jedoch und eine verstärkte Einflußnahme beider Regierungen auf die lokalen Eliten bewirkten, daß das Burgenlandproblem bis 1932 bereits wesentlich an Bedeutung eingebüßt hatte.
