The Protector
This little novel is full of fabrication. Where exactly do the two branches of this river of words, Fact and Fiction, separate? We like to keep you guessing, but we'll drop a few facts. Remember Baker Jr. was an early Arlington, Vermont resident and patriotic Revolutionary War figure. One of Vermont's famed Green Mountain Boys, Remember Baker Jr. isn't "remembered" like fellow heroes Seth Warner or Ethan Allen and brother, Ira. In part that's because Baker was cut down Aug. 22, 1775, early in the war. He was only 38 years old. The gristmill Baker built in 1765 is inoperable but still exists in Arlington. The mill depicted in these stories suits the author's fancies, not historical accuracy. In the first book of this series, Full Speed Behind, the Vermont Principals' Association was cast in a somewhat villainous role. Shoot, every good story needs conflict so we picked on the VPA, which is a real entity and not at all sinister, as portrayed in the first book. And perhaps this one. Arlington Memorial High School is real, but Manchester High School isn't. There's an outstanding school in Manchester, Burr & Burton Academy, but that was a mouthful that we chose to simplify and did not at all want to impugn. Martha Canfield Library exists right across East Arlington Road from the high school. Pound for pound and book for book, it's our favorite library on the planet. The abandoned white house just across the Vermont-New York state line is real - and real scary looking. But as of this writing, construction is taking place so the formidable place faces a less haunting future. And Ben Patrick, the KneesOverToesGuy upon whom our star, Ellis Remember Baker, is loosely modeled, is very real. Applying the exercises he also teaches to thousands, Ben can reverse dunk with authority and land doing perfect splits. There's more fact in this story but you'll have to ferret it out from the fabricated fun stuff. And therein lies the key to The Protector: If you have fun riding down both branches of the river, we all win.
