The Invisible Thread
Eight-year-old Despina would do anything for Zehra. In a time of social and racial injustice, and extreme hardship, and without a mother to care for them, her sister is the only person that brings Despina happiness. For her, she will exchange her best dress and shoes in favour of the only dirty rag on her sister's back and cardboard stuffed shoes so she can go to the village fair. Despina has promised to never let go of her sister's hand. But one day Zehra vanishes. 'A tragic accident up in the mountains,' her father says. Fifteen years on and the unthinkable happens. Zehra is buried for the second time.
