"Lupe from the Block"
Through the multidisciplinary approach of cultural studies, my thesis investigates the commodification of La Virgen de Guadalupe, both in and outside the Chicana/o community, and what she represents to people. There may be many reasons as to why she is commodified, including that she is profitable, popular, and for religious reasons, but also that when she is appropriated by the mainstream community it is because she is a stand-in for the Chicana/o community in that she may represent the exotic, the poor, the Spanish-speaking, the underdog, etc. I examine these inquiries by an analysis of the Latina performance collective Fulana and specifically their video of "Lupe and JuanDi From the Block", as well as looking at their advertisements created for La Virgen.
