Olivia Stewart Lester examines true and false prophecy at the intersections of interpretation, gender, and economics in Revelation, Sibylline Oracles 4-5, and contemporary ancient Mediterranean texts. With respect to gender, these texts construct a discourse of divine violence against prophets, in which masculine divine domination of both male and female prophets reinforces the authenticity of the prophetic message. Regarding economics, John and the Jewish sibyllists resist the economic actions of political groups around them, especially Rome, by imagining an alternate universe with a new prophetic economy. In this economy, God requires restitution from human beings, whose evil behavior incurs debt. The ongoing appeal of prophecy as a rhetorical strategy in Revelation and Sibylline Oracles 4-5, and the ongoing rivalries in which these texts engage, argue for prophecy's continuing significance in a larger ancient Mediterranean religious context.

Oprah Winfrey, and President Obama. Seriously. I would love to garner their responses to that section. I also wish I could have said, "Christopher Reeve." But it was too late for that. You, the reader, will be limited to his own brief description of his faith (page 266), as quoted from The Readers' Digest, October, 2004, and to my response. If I were asked the question today, I would add, "Glenn Beck." Is that a different side of the story? Or can vastly different philosophies sprout from a common stem?Twenty-first century America: Can we be bothered with sobering questions, as to how we've missed the way? Can blind pursuit of personal pleasures and comforts be deferred, while we seek the reality of that which would satisfy the soul? Are we willing to be disturbed now, in order to embrace costly solutions to deadly personal and societal problems?Where to look? Truth. Truth is unwavering, and impervious to attack. Truth will not step down to take sides. Granted permission, truth assumes command, and sifts everything. It demands full surrender first, and sets free afterward. It replaces self assurance with humility, and hatred with compassion. It gives corrected vision through lenses of love and courage.Musty stuff? It isn't. Truth is ultimate treasure, embodied in the eternal God, and in his Son, Jesus Christ. Our fall into untruth is what moved Jesus Christ to bridge the chasm when we were all on the losing side. A close study of the visual record left by political visits following disasters Presidents Herbert Clark Hoover and George Walker Bush were challenged many times during their political careers. On Floods and Photo Ops: How Herbert Hoover and George W. Bush Exploited Catastrophes focuses on the visual record of two such tests: the relief efforts led by Commerce Secretary Hoover during the 1927 Mississippi River flood and the Bush team's response to Hurricane Katrina. By concentrating on these two historic events, Paul Martin Lester discusses political photography, particularly the use of photo ops during catastrophes. He illuminates the evolution of a genre and explores the differences and similarities between these two American politicians. Hoover and Bush reached the pinnacle of political achievement, only to lose in the court of popular opinion. From two photo ops that occurred almost eighty years apart, Lester offers a model for close readings and comparisons of images in practicing visual history. Under Lester's examination, these otherwise unremarkable photographs speak volumes about political response to natural disasters. He offers readers not just a deeper appreciation of these pictures but a methodology for seriously studying photographs and what they can reveal about a historical moment.
