(in)Visible Freedom
(In)Visible Freedom, an original performance text collaboratively produced by Theater for Social Change and performance artist Nina Angela Mercer, is a collective meditation on the never-ending struggle for greater justice and freedom. The theater ensemble, composed of formerly incarcerated black women who subsequently pursued college degrees, created the work, drawing upon critical reflections of their own lives, the historic struggles of African Americans, and the devastating social consequences of mass incarceration. Project documentarian Robin McGinty calls it "a project birthed from the intimacy of pain and joy, of loss and struggle, of mourning and salvation embedded in the aesthetics of radical hope and aspiration." The volume includes notes on the production and a post-performance conversation among guest speakers asha bandele and DeAnna Hoskins, (In)Visible Freedom performers / writers, College and Community Fellowship Executive Director Vivian D. Nixon, and the audience. Featuring writing by: Teronia Campbell, Grace M. Cho, Abby Dobson, Selina Fulford, Katherine Sweetness Jennings, Yolanda Johnson-Peterkin, Rose M. Kim, Denise McFarlan, Robin McGinty, Nina Angela Mercer, Vivian D. Nixon, Edna Joyce Sams, Alesa Simmons, and Cheryl Wilkins.
