This Time No Cathedrals
On December 31, 1975, Helen Schucman, the scribe of 'A Course in Miracles', received a special message from the same voice that dictated to her the words of the book, a voice self-identified as the historical Jesus. As she embarked on the publishing phase of her 1200-page manuscript (written between 1965 - 1972), he would clarify how this would unfold. "This time" it would be different, this time there would be no significant setbacks for the path he taught from reaching its fulfillment as "helper of the world." The message distinguishes "this time" from the time his ministry launched in first century Palestine. "It must develop without error, and with nothing to mar its perfect purity."This book explores that vision for the Course (ACIM), and how that Way of Jesus can transform life around us. Part One describes the spiritual tradition that is unfolding around the Course, still in its infancy. Topics include: the Helen & Bill story, discernment and guidance seeking, healing others, spiritual direction (mentorship), community formation, interpretation, practice, and the material in Helen's notes on nuclear family, sex, and parenting.Part Two defines the Course as a new iteration of an ancient prophetic tradition. My chapter on the Levitical subtext and Gospel reorientation is one example of how the Course situates itself in that tradition. It is a social gospel, in this sense. ACIM's third volume situates the path into the lived experience of the follower, who is teaching God's way in the world, a person with traits of human goodness. It holds a vision of a world totally liberated from false authority. It becomes a place where equal worth of every aspect of creation is recognized, a sanctuary of learning that is cooperative, abundant, and safe.Although written for Course students, this book is certainly readable to those unfamiliar with Course teachings. 'This Time No Cathedrals' will interest readers interested is reexamining ACIM as a path that can help fix the injustices of a corrupt world and provides nourishment for individual spiritual journeys. It provides a compelling exploration of liberation ideology and abolitionist praxis.
