Includes correspondence, diaries, notes, newspaper clippings, and other papers. Contains 632 letters from John Brown, Sr., many letters addressed to Brown's wife, Wealthy C. Hotchkiss, and a letterbook of the firm Perkins and Brown, wood dealers of Springfield, Massachusetts.

An historical collection of Civil War ephemera, originally formed by John C. Browne, a resident of Philadelphia. It is comprised of many thousands of individual items from both the North and the South, including broadsides, patriotic covers, numerous Confederate postage stamps, badges, a fine series of Currier & Ives views of military and naval actions, election posters, flyers and ballots of the 1864 presidential campaign, Confederate bonds, song sheets and sheet music, photographs, engraved and lithographic portraits, Confederate playing cards, advertising cards, paper currency, newspaper and magazine clippings, lithographic caricatures, recruiting posters, Confederate proclamations, etc. It also includes a Constitution printed for abolitionist John Brown, various rare broadsides, and possibly the first printing of Maryland, My Maryland. Collection includes: 1. Agreement, in writing of W.A. Bartlett, between Albert Packard and J.H. Brown for the settlement of debts of the firm of Brown, Packard, and Joel P. Dedmond, due to Henry Mellus, William D. Phelps, and William Fisher, Nov. 24, 1846; 2. Receipt to J.H. Brown from Eggleston (George W.) & Company, San Francisco, Jan. 15, 1849; 3. Deed, by Jonathan Drake Stevenson to J.H. Brown, for sale of property in New York of the Pacific [i.e. Pittsburg, Calif.], signed by Stevenson and witnessed by William C. Parker and Stephen C. Massett, San Francisco, California, May 22, 1849.
