Seizures and Epilepsy
Seizures and Epilepsy
This second edition of Seizures and Epilepsy, written almost a quarter of a century after the ground-breaking first edition, is more than an update: it is a complete revision due to tremendous advances in the field. Our understanding of the fundamental neuronal mechanisms underlying epileptic phenomena, as well as current diagnosis and treatment, have been heavily influenced over the past several decades by seminal neuroscientific developments, particularly the introduction of molecular neurobiology, genetics, and modern neuroimaging. According to the World Health Organization, epilepsy accounts for 1% of the global burden of disease, equivalent to breast cancer in women and lung cancer in men. Among primary disorders of the brain, it is equivalent to depression, dementia, and substance abuse. Singly authored by Jerome Engel, Jr, this must-read from 1989 reasserts itself as a modern classic comprehensive textbook covering a broad range of both basic and clinical epileptology. Basic scientists who are interested in learning more about clinical epileptology, as well as clinicians who would like to understand more about fundamental mechanisms will find this text useful. Residents and postdoctoral fellows, particularly those interested in a career in epilepsy, will benefit from the continuity and organization of this single-authored comprehensive textbook.

Epilepsy
This volume is the second in a series developed under the auspices of the World Federation of Neurology to meet the needs of neurologists who must practice medicine without many of the advantages that are often taken for granted in the industrialized world. It is targeted to neurologists practicing in low-resource environments and those who wish to practice cost-effective neurology, and addresses issues important for neurologists in developing countries that are not covered in standard textbooks. The series will update the reader in currently accepted diagnostic and management practice. Material is presented in a user-friendly, interactive manner, with abundant case material. Epilepsy is one of the most common serious primary brain disorders, affecting forty million people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, epilepsy accounts for 1% of the Global Burden of Disease, equivalent to lung cancer in men and to breast cancer in women. It is not surprising, therefore, that ten to twenty texts on epilepsy are published annually. These texts contain the very latest information on diagnosis and treatment of various aspects of epilepsy however, approximately 80% of people with epilepsy in the world live in developing countries, where modern diagnostic and treatment approaches do not exist. Upwards of 90% of people with epilepsy in these areas receive no treatment at all. This is the first text to address the issues faced by neurologists who must deliver care with limited resources, often in a setting of tropical diseases and malnutrition, that characterize practice in developing countries."

Epilepsy Board Quick Review
Epilepsy Board Quick Review
Engel's "Epilepsy Board Quick Review: Selected Tables and Figures from Seizures and Epilepsy" will utilize 86 tables and 47 black and white figures from the "parent book" to provide a quick guide for anyone preparing for the boards. In addition to serving as a board-review guide, this will also be a handy pocket guide for any physician interested in a quick reference to drug tables, signs and symptoms, and other unusual facets of child or adult presenting with seizures. Seizures and Epilepsy, Second Edition has quickly reasserted itself as a modern classic and comprehensive textbook covering a broad range of both basic and clinical epileptology. Singly authored by Jerome Posner, this must-read from 1989 appeals to basic scientists who are interested in learning more about clinical epileptology, as well as clinicians who would like to understand more about fundamental mechanisms will find this text useful. This quick reference guide retains all of the benefits of the classic, in a pared down and easily manageable guide.

Generalized Seizures: From Clinical Phenomenology to Underlying Systems and Networks
Generalized Seizures: From Clinical Phenomenology to Underlying Systems and Networks
The present book is the fruit of a workshop, designed as a discussion forum, with the participation of experts from all over the world, to extensively review clinical, neurophysiological and fundamental research available data in order to generate new axes for research, clinical practice and care. The first section traces back to the definitions and concepts underlying the terms “generalized seizures and epilepsies”. Section II reviews human and animal data suggesting that the brainstem network plays an important role for tonic seizures generation. The third and fourth sections analyze recent knowledge on cortico-thalamic and basal ganglia networks in absence and myoclonic seizures, both in animal models and in humans. The fifth section compares the phenomenology of “Primary versus Secondary Tonico-clonic seizures”, including animal data, clinical expression in humans and genetics. Section VI goes back to the discussion “Cortical” versus “Centrencephalic” theories. The last two chapters thoroughly review the clinical applications of current knowledge, in terms of pharmacological approach and clinical care.

Plum and Posner's Diagnosis of Stupor and Coma
Plum and Posner's Diagnosis of Stupor and Coma
Delirium, stupor and coma are common clinical states that confront clinicians in almost every medical specialty. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, coma can often be treated successfully. Conversely, delay in diagnosis and treatment may be lethal. This monograph provides an update on the clinical approach that was laid out in the previous 3 editions. It describes an approach for the physician at the bedside to diagnose and treat alterations of consciousness, based on pathophysiologic principles. The book begins with a description of the physiology of consciousness and the pathophysiology of disorders of consciousness. It continues with a description of the approach to a patient with a disorder of consciousness, emphasizing the bedside examination, but including the use of modern imaging techniques. The important structural and metabolic causes of coma are reviewed in detail. It then describes the emergency treatment, both medical and surgical, of patients with specific disorders of consciousness and their prognosis. New chapters describe the approach to the diagnosis of brain death and the clinical physiology of the vegetative state and minimally conscious state, as well as the ethics of dealing with such patients and their families. The book is aimed at medical students and residents, in fields from internal medicine and pediatrics to emergency medicine, surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry, who are likely to encounter patients with disordered states of consciousness. It includes historical background and basic neurophysiology that is important for those in the clinical neurosciences, but also lays out a practical approach to the comatose patient that is an important part of the repertoire of all clinicians who provide emergency care for patients with disorders of consciousness.
