The process of creativity is discussed. The influences of other disciplines on the heightening of consciousness are described as well as methodologies of observation that have been employed in the last 100 years are elucidated. Attention is paid to the specific contribution of modern Irish poetry especially in the role of the poet in society. Works of three non English poets (Salinas, Lorca and Pasternak) are appraised in some detail and the role of these three poets in their societies discussed with a view to the vindication of poetic insight and illumination against societal forces that would destroy the poet and his poetry. The final section of the work deals with poetry as an art form uniquely able to interpret a fragmented and arid post modern world. A scantily-dressed girl dancing in a lighted window jolts Francis Copeland from his world of books. Francis, now approaching middleage, whose life and marriage are in a rut, fantasises about the girl and finds it hard to accept, as he discovers later, that she is Judy, a dancer in the local pub. The hidden world of the avenue unfolds to Francis. Who is Myrtle, his wife? (Does she genuinely go to bingo every Tuesday night?). He does not know her. Who are the real parents of the street kid Freddy? Who was the neighbour whose car killed Francis' mother when Francis was twelve years old? Raw suburban truths are exposed as Francis, with the help of the local children, slowly unravels the secrets of the avenue.

First Edinburgh edition (published in Philadelphia in the same year) of an illustrated guide to first aid, written by Surgeon-Captain E.J. Lawless M.D., of the East Surrey Regiment, and designed to 'suit the requirements of those attending regimental classes', as well as to members of volunteer and civil ambulance classes. 'Recent circular orders upon the formation of Brigade Bearer Companies in the Volunteer Service, render it advisable that the course for the ambulance proficiency certificate should be supplemented by a second and more extended instruction in subjects such as Sick Nursing - Field Hospital Organization - the elementary principles of Health and of Sick Diet, &c. Part II has been written with this end in view' (preface). The Volunteer Infantry Brigade Bearer plan to create dedicated companies appears to have been begun not long after the formation in 1877 of the Ambulance Association of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. As Lawless makes clear in his preface, the scheme seems never to have really taken off nation-wide, and he appeals to the executive Committee of the St. John Ambulance Association, that some of their newly certified and qualified able-bodied young men could be encouraged to swell the ranks of the County Bearer and Regimental Companies.

An album compiled by English artist Frederick Smallfield that includes drawings, photographs, letters, and printed ephemera. Many of the artists represented were part of the St. John's Wood Clique, an informal group of artists based in St. John's Wood, London, ca. 1863-1890.
