Files, 1968-1977, of Henry C. Nelson, Jr., as Treasurer and James H. Hammond, as President of the committee, include minutes, correspondence and other records of the foundation documenting efforts to raise funds and design a statue honoring James F. Byrnes, to be installed on the grounds of the South Carolina State House (Columbia, S.C.); including correspondence of contributors and the sculptor, Charles C. Parks (1922-2012).

He left behind seven children, the eldest only twelve, and a wife who was eight and a half months pregnant. As a field officer in a prestigious unit, the opportunities for fame and glory seemed limitless.
