This handbook and dictionary aims to provide the reader with a general overview of Zionist history and historiography, to tabulate all data on Zionism, and to gather in one source as many terms dealing directly or indirectly with Zionism and Jewish nationalism as possible.

The momentous events of modern Jewish history have led to a proliferation of books and articles on Jewish life over the last 350 years. Placing modern Jewish history into both universal and local contexts, this selected, annotated bibliography organizes and categorizes the best of this vast array of written material. The authors have included all English-language books of major importance on world Jewry and on individual Jewish communities, plus books most readily available to researchers and readers, and a select number of pamphlets and articles. The resulting bibliography is also a guide to recent Jewish historiography and research methods.

Covers the period 30 January 1933 to 14 May 1948, concentrating on events in Europe and the Middle East, and particularly on Nazi Germany, the "Yishuv" in Israel, and the role of the United States in the unfolding of events from the accession of Hitler to power to the establishment of the State of Israel. An introduction (pp. 1-20) surveys currents in European and Jewish history in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. Includes a glossary, bibliography, and name, place, and subject indexes.

Part 2 provides a complete dictionary of terms relating to the Holocaust culled from dozens of primary and secondary sources in a range of languages. Included here is a comprehensive set of tables on Aktionen, Aliya Bet, anti-Jewish legislation, antisemitic organizations, collaboration, concentration camps, fascism, the Third Reich, the Nazi Party, Jewish and nonsectarian organizations, publications, Judenrate, and resistance movements.

The first bibliography appeared in 1986. The first supplement appeared in 1990. This volume contains 3,870 items.
