Caring and Compassionate
Thousands of children passed through the wards of Brisbane's Mater Children's Hospital from the day its doors opened in 1931, in the depths of the Great Depression. The Sisters of Mercy were instrumental in defining what would soon become known as the hallmark of Mater care, high quality clinical treatment blended with compassion and delivered with commitment to the best possible outcome for young patients. This history, a companion to Expressions of Mercy, Helen Gregory's centenary history of Brisbane's Mater hospitals tells the story of the Mater Children's Hospital against the background of rapidly growing, ethnically-diverse populations in South East Queensland. During its eighty-three years of service, the Mater Children's Hospital chartered developments in paediatrics and changes in governmental health policies, solidifying its reputation as an outstanding provider of dedicated and compassionate health care and clinical expertise.
