MANASSAS NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK preserves the scene of two of the famous battles of the Civil War. The first shall be ever memorable as the opening engagement of that great conflict, while the second, fought approximately a year later, paved the way for Lee's first invasion of the North. In each instance Confederate arms won signal success and dangerously threatened the National Capital. The Photographic History of the Civil War was first published in 1911 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the great conflict. These volumes were dedicated to the American People in tribute to the courage and the valor with which they met one of the greatest crises that a nation has ever known.
