Covers the time period from the late 19th century to 1993. Teenagers, such as Nancy Drew, have been omitted. The authors begin with an essay exploring changes in the characterization of the female sleuth since the late 1800s, reflecting on broader social changes in the prevailing concept of women in the United States, and also focusing on social issues raised in the novels.
