Visit of Cyrille Pierre-Theodore Laplace
Visit of Cyrille Pierre-Theodore Laplace
This description of Bodega Bay and Fort Ross was published in 1854 by Cyrille Laplace in the sixth volume of his work, Campagne de Circumnavigation de la Fregate L'Artemise pendant les annes 1837, 1838, 1839, et 1840 sous le commandement de M. Laplace, captaine de visseau. Laplace was captain of the French ship Artemise on a circumnavigation of the globe during the years 1837-1840. This work has heretofore only been translated in small sections. I believe this is mainly due to the florid writing of the author that makes translation into fluent English somewhat difficult...The account begins with the Artemise sailing off the California coast in the vicinity of Fort Ross after sailing from Hawaii. -- Glenn Farris
