The repertoire of the early Viennese ballroom was highly influential in the broader histories of both social dance and music in nineteenth-century Europe. Yet music scholarship has traditionally paid little attention to ballroom dance music before the era of the Strauss dynasty, with the exception of a handful of dances by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. This book positions Viennese social dances in their specific performing contexts and investigates the wider repertoire of the Viennese ballroom in the decades around 1800, most of which stems from dozens of non-canonical composers. Close examination of this material yields new insights into the social contexts associated with familiar dance types, and reveals that the ballroom repertoire of this period connected with virtually every aspect of Viennese musical life, from opera and concert music to the emerging category of entertainment music that was later exemplified by the waltzes of Lanner and Strauss.

At 7:30pm on the 8th of February, 2014, a graduate voice recital was presented featuring works covering several time periods and languages. It was given in the room 101 Recital Hall of the University of Florida Music Building. The recital began with “E pur cosí un giorno . . . Piangeró la sorte mia,” one of Cleopatra's famous arias from George Friedric Handel's opera, Giulio Cesare in Egitto. It continued with three German Lied by Richard Strauss: “Ständchen,” “Morgen,” and “Kling!” Concluding the first half was a bel canto aria “Ah tardai troppo . . . O luce di quest'anima,” from Gaetano Donzetti's Linda di Chamounix. The second half consisted of two song sets: Claude Debussy's Quatre Chansons de jeunesse and Robert L. Morris' Lyric Suite: Spirituals in a Gospel Style. Along with a variety of styles, the repertoire explored different aspects of vocal technique, including breath management, agility, and vowel formation. A solid technique was required to allow freedom of expression to artistically fit the mood of each piece.
