The second volume in a series detailing the work of Christian Schad--one of the most important artists associated with the New Objectivity--this examination goes beyond his most famous medium to explore his lesser-known talent for photography. The collection reveals numerous rare images from the early to mid-1930s for the first time, from landscapes and abstract motifs to the striking metropolis of Berlin. Featuring accompanying discussions on the relationship between the New Objectivity and photography, the book also delves into Schad's artistic approach, focusing on his use of photographs in the painting of his famous portraits as well as his later unique method of artistic cameraless photography in his "Schadographs."

This publication presents the work of Martin Dorbaum, Gero Gries, Yochiro Kawaguchi, Gerhard Mantz and Yves Netzhammer, all artists use computer-aided, 3-D applications to generate objects which are then presented as two-dimensional images. As this publication demonstrates the endless possibilities of 3D simulation will have an untold impact on the medium of photography in the twenty-first century.

Ein ganz anderes Pathos spricht aus den Berlin-Bildern, die der Sammler Marc Barbey in seiner Privatgalerie Collection Regard ausstellt. Barbey hat den Nachlass des Fotografen Hein Gorny erworben, der im Herbst 1945 zusammen mit seinem amerikanischen Kollegen Adolph C. Byers Luftaufnahmen von der zerstörten Reichshauptstadt machte. Die Fotos sollten in einem gemeinsamen Band erscheinen, der nie zustande kam. Mann kann diese Bilder nicht ohne Schaudern betrachten; zugleich wecken sie ein Gefühl der Dankbarkeit dafür, dass so viele der ruinierten Gebäude inzwischen wiederstanden sind. Die Reichskanzlei aber ist Geschichte wie Fritz Eschens Amerikanerinnen. An ihrer Stelle jetzt, wovon sich Eschen, Gorny und Byers noch nichts träumen liessen: der sozialistische Wohnungsbau der DDR.

One must be thankful in life, the centenarian master baker Walter Gräper explains. He is one of the over 200 UnRuheständler (UnRetired or Restless People), who Arne Wesenberg (b. 1974) portrayed with his analogue, large-format camera over a period of more than seven years. What they all have in common is that, despite their old age, they remain in the heart of the community and their professional lives: craftsmen, artists, and actors well past the age of retirement. Arne Wesenberg photographed these unretired people across Germany and posed the questions: How does a society develop, in which people become increasingly older? What comes after a long professional life? The answers provided by the unretired people are extremely varied? just like their portraits. The reason behind their restlessness is different for each of them. Some need the money, while others search for personal fulfillment or simply feel the need to serve the community.
