The book is a series of short stories, some of them linked by Dunsany's invented pantheon of deities who dwell in Pegāna, which were the focus of his earlier collections The Gods of Pegāna and Time and the Gods.

Dunsany had a weird, weird imagination, but unlike most folks who think weird thoughts, he had a powerful ability to write (as you can see if you look through the text).

In 1919 Dunsany told an American interviewer "In The Gods of Pegana I tried to account for the ocean and the moon. I don't know whether anyone else has ever tried that before".

Lord Dunsany was an Irish poet and dramatist. He spent his life living in the famous Dunsany castle in Ireland. This collection of 19 short fantasy stories is also published under the name The Last Book of Wonder. These stories greatly influenced Tolkein, LeGuin, and other fantasy writers.
