The forest is a significant natural resource that nature has provided to humankind. The protection and development of forest resources affects the global environment as well as a nation's population and economy. Development of forests involves the extension of the resource base, whereas conservation of forests implies the preservation and control of the resource. In the light of their long-standing cohabitation, the preservation and development of forest resources are closely linked to the means of subsistence of local inhabitants. It is obvious that any endeavour to conserve and develop forest resources cannot be seen in isolation without taking the local inhabitants' concerns about their means of subsistence into account.

चंपारण में मोतिहारी एक खोज चंपारण को केंद्र में रखकर बहुत-सी किताबें लिखी जा चुकी हैं। महात्मा गांधी पर शोध करनेवाले कई इतिहासकारों, समाजशास्त्रियों, शिक्षाविदों और विद्वानों ने चंपारण को अपने अध्ययन का विषय बनाया। लेकिन, चंपारण की बात हुई तो सिर्फ चंपारण की ही बात हुई। भले ही मोतिहारी उस चंपारण का मुख्यालय और मुख्य शहर रहा, जहा गांधी जी के कदम पड़े तो अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ आंदोलन को नई दिशा मिली, लेकिन, चंपारण की चर्चा में मोतिहारी का बस जिक्र ही आता रहा, इस जगह, इस शहर की अपनी पहचान कहीं गुम-सी हो गई। आगे चलकर मोतिहारी चर्चा में आया प्रख्यात लेखक जॉर्ज ऑरवेल के जन्मस्थान के रूप में। ऑरवेल पर काफी खोजबीन की गई, बहुत-से शोध हुये। लेकिन, ऑरवेल के मोतिहारी की तो हरेक अध्ययन में बस चर्चा भर होती है। इस बात से कोई इंकार नहीं कर सकता कि मोतिहारी की अपनी खास अहमियत तो रही है। लेकिन, जान पड़ता है कि इस बात की कभी कोई पड़ताल नहीं हुई कि आखिर मोतिहारी पूरे चंपारण का केंद्र कैसे बना। मौजूदा हालात और समस्याओं को सामने लाने में मीडिया अपनी भूमिका जरूर निभा रहा है, लेकिन शहर की खोई हुई पहचान को सामने लाने और नई पहचान बनाने में उसकी भूमिका लगभग नगण्य ही है। ऐसे में, यह जिम्मेदारी आखिरकार मुझ जैसे स्वतंत्र लेखकों पर ही आती है, जो उस इतिहास और उन कहानियों को सामने ला सकें, जिन पर शहर की बुनियाद टिकी है। संसाधनों और समय के अभाव के कारण इस मामले में जितना आवश्यक था उतना शोध संभव नहीं हो सका। लेकिन, खोज के उपरांत जो कहानी हासिल हुई, उसे पाठकों के समक्ष प्रस्तुत करने का एक छोटा-सा प्रयास किया गया है।
