Joachim Gaillard (b.1625) married Esther Paparel in 1664, and they immigrated from France to South Carolina about 1687. Descendants lived in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

Proteins, Pep tides and Amino Acids SourceBook is the second in a series of reference books conceived to cover the explosive growth in commercially available biological reagents. The success of our first reference work, Source Book of Enzymes published in 1997, encouraged us to continue this series. Choosing proteins, peptides, and amino acids as the subject matter for the second volume was simple, given their preeminence in regulating biochemical processes and their importance to modern molecular biology. The SourceBook series was inspired by our difficulty in locating a suitable replacement for a depleted reagent in the midst of an urgent research project. To our dismay, we found the reagent supplier out of business and the product line no longer available. Other reagent catalogs on our library bookshelf offered a narrow selection and incom plete functional information. We were ultimately able to locate a satisfactory alternative only by making countless inquiries and paging through innumerable product catalogs and technical data sheets. We needed-but could not find-a single resource that cataloged available compounds, organized them in a logical and accessible format, provided critical technical information to distinguish one from another, and told us where we could buy them.

The Chemistry of Lignin provides a critical review of the literature published from 1949 to 1958. This book provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of lignin chemistry. Organized into 27 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the derivatives that are prepared for the characterization of the mother substance. This text then examines the various kinds of lignin and biosynthetic lignin-like products, which have been characterized by their behavior toward oxidation with nitrobenzene and alkali. Other chapters consider the morphological distribution of lignin in the wood fiber and the place of origin of lignin precursors and of the lignification process. This book discusses as well the formation or biosynthesis of lignin in plants and reviews the structure, isolation, and biosynthesis of lignin. The final chapter deals with producing lignin by the action of enzymes. This book is a valuable resource for lignin chemists, scientists, research workers, and botanists.

Born and brought up in Whitechapel, John Sebastian Helmcken worked his way through apprenticeships as a chemist and a medical pupil before gaining admission to Guy's Hospital to complete his training. The accounts he gives of working class family life and of the great economic and social disadvantages he had to confront in order to become a doctor make this volume of memoirs not only a valuable historical document, but also an autobiography with considerable human interest. In 1850 Helmcken arrived in Fort Victoria -- at that time still a fortified trading post -- to take up the position of Hudson's Bay Company doctor. British Columbia was then in the midst of rapid change: the fur trade was in decline, the gold rush was soon to begin, and the first phase of genuine settlement was just getting under way. In 1856 Helmcken entered what was to be a political life lasting 15 years and served as Speaker in the first Legislative Assembly. This section of the Reminiscences is filled with vivid and often humorous descriptions of the personalities and everyday life of Victoria and British Columbia from the 1850's to the 1870's. In 1870 Helmcken secured his place in the history of Canada and British Columbia by accepting the task, together with Sir Joseph Trutch and R.W.W. Carrall, of negotiating British Columbia's entry into Canada. The Reminiscences, now held in the Provincial Archives of British Columbia, have a special significance for students of provincial and federal Canadian history. Helmcken's is a unique account of the way social and economic conditions were actually felt and experienced in B.C. at the time of Confederation. Together with his personal diary of the Ottawa negotiations, edited by Willard E. Ireland and included here, the memoirs are the most complete and intimate record available of how Canada secured a foothold on the Pacific.
