Culture and Neighbourhoods: Concepts and references
Few contemporary European cities can avoid facing the socio-econoic inequalities that are often reflected in the urban landscape. Social conflicts in the outskirts of cities or certain inner-city areas, complex multicultural relations, growing isolation, anonymity, and loss of primary and physically close relationships as globalization progresses are becoming almost characteristic in the cities. The Council of Europe is taking up the issues of culture and neighbourhoods with a research project involving 26 neighbourhoods of 12 European cities. This is the first of a series of publications planned to describe the results of the project
