American novelist, Clara Louise Burnham, wrote of middle-class Americans and upper-class New Englanders in this captivating work. She presented a story of people from two different classes and nationalities, their process of being better people, with a subtle romantic angle. The novel contains one of Burnham's favorite settings, i.e., beautiful, rural islands off the coast of Maine in Casco Bay.

Written by famous novelist Clara Burnham, this novel follows the story of 24-year-old Hugh and his companions. The book contains themes of friendship, family, and romance and provides an interesting look at society and social expectations. Much of the story is told through conversations between characters with short descriptions between long sections of dialogue.
