From Fascination to Folly: A Troubled History of Collecting since the 1600s
From Fascination to Folly: A Troubled History of Collecting since the 1600s
This book explores the interplay of Western European exploration and trade, with collecting, cabinets of curiosities and museums, and with the role of booty and plunder in the building of empires from ca.1600 until the end of the 19th century. The book focuses principally on the Dutch, English, Spanish, French and Italian at different times of their colonial power over the course of these 300 years. The achievements of exploration and trade provide the basis for these countries and both the state and individuals to build collections and museums. This involved governments to legitimize the pursuit of booty and subsequently looting whether by themselves, members of the ruling class or privateers. Throughout much of this period, there those who stood up and challenged such practices, passing laws to criminalize, curtail or contain these activities. By the late 18th century, these parallel but disparate activities converged. It was era of Napoleon and his imperial ambitions that drew these disparate activities together, with his support of intellectual inquiry alongside military plunder and collecting. This served as a symbol of imperial power of the French empire that, alongside England and Italy, exploited the wealth and riches of Egypt, India, and China.

EBOOK Fundamentals of Corporate Finance
EBOOK Fundamentals of Corporate Finance
Fundamentals of Corporate Finance 8e combines an applied introduction of concepts, with a clear and strong focus on learning outcomes. Based on the principle that students’ understanding of corporate finance should be developed in terms of a few integrated and powerful ideas, it has 3 basic themes at its core: 1. An emphasis on intuition: It separates and explains key principles on a common-sense, intuitive level before launching into specifics. The intuitive organisation of chapters also means that traditionally ‘more-difficult’ topics arise as a natural extension to the work that has gone before. 2. A unified valuation approach: Net present value (NPV) is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. 3. A managerial focus: It emphasises the role of the financial manager as a decision maker, and the need for managerial input and judgement is stressed. Up-to-date examples and cases in all chapters make the 8th edition a comprehensive manual of applied financial management, covering financial hot topics and focus areas, as well as a historic overview of developments in (and lessons learned from) equity and debt markets. Cases focusing on well-known ANZ and international companies show how recognisable organisations put corporate finance into practice, and how real-world events such as the COVID-19 pandemic affect some of their corporate finance decisions. This new edition is even more flexible than its predecessors, offering flexibility of coverage to unit coordinators in designing their courses.

Colonoscopy and Colorectal Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a major public health problem worldwide. Fortunately most CRCs originate from a precursor lesion, the adenoma, which is accessible and removable. This is the rationale for CRC screening programs, which are aimed to diagnose CRC at an early stage or even better to detect and resect the advanced adenoma before CRC has developed. In this background colonoscopy emerges as the main tool to achieve these goals with recent evidence supporting its role in CRC prevention. This book deals with several topics to be faced when implementing a CRC screening program. The interested reader will learn about the rationale and challenges of implementing such a program, the management of the detected lesions, the prevention of complications of colonoscopy, and finally the use of other screening modalities that are emerging as valuable alternatives. The relevance of the topics covered in it and the updated evidence included by the authors turn this book into a very useful tool to introduce the reader in this amazing and evolving field.
