Military Papers of Thomas A. and Charles A. Budd
Letter, 10 Feb. 1820, signed by Smith Thompson, presenting, on behalf of the U.S. Congress, a silver medal to Charles A. Budd for his role in the victory on Lake Champlain on 11 Sept. 1814. Thomas A. Budd materials include three letters from Charles Wilkes, 1847, 1861, thanking Budd for his service during Wilkes' expedition, and discussing Civil War service; a receipt to Capt. Budd of the California, issued on Taboga, 31 Oct. 1850; letter from M.C. Perry, 26 July 1852, giving authority for the purchase of "articles of utility and modern invention" for presentation to the Japanese, and including an extract of a letter from the acting secretary of state, naming some items to be purchased; letter from John P. Kennedy, Navy Dept., Nov. 17, 1852, ordering Budd to report to Capt. Boarman for command of the U.S. sloop of war Vincennes; letter from J.C. Dobbin, Navy Dept., 29 Apr. 1853, accepting the resignation of Lieut. Budd; and the pension certificate issued to Louisa T. Budd, widow of Thomas A. Budd, 16 June 1862, and signed by Secretary of the Interior Caleb B. Smith. Also, appointment of Thomas A. Budd as midshipman, signed by President Andrew Jackson, 1 Aug. 1831; and Budd's appointment as lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, signed by President John Tyler, 9 Sept. 1841.
