Speeding Up Renewable Energy Permitting in Europe
Lengthy, complex and multiple parallel permitting procedures for renewable energy generation, grid connection and related reinforcement of transmission grid have for long been identified as a major barrier to the further deployment of renewable energy. It delays target achievement and increases project costs. This contrasts with the pressing need to increase the share of renewable energy sources within the energy system for ensuring the energy transition towards climate neutrality, fostering security of supply, and addressing affordability and competitiveness concerns due to high energy prices. To address this remaining shortcoming of the energy transition, the European Commission (EC) has adopted different legislative and policy initiatives. Among these are the revision of the recently recast Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII), the revision of the TEN-E Regulation, and the implementation of the REPowerEU Plan from 2022.
