Kim Weston Festival of the Performing Arts
This story is about a lady who had a dream of working with a group of youths, to teach them about performing arts. This was something that had never been done before in a summer program. Her name is Ms. Kim Weston. She talked to a group of her friends and shared her ideas with them. They were a group of professional entertainers. They started the Kim Weston Festival of the Performing Arts. Legends like Teddy Harris Walter Mason, Earl Van Dyke and Kim Weston all came together for this great cause. They set up workshops, for dance, band, drama, creative writing, vocal music, audio video and designing workshops. She set up a meeting with the Mayor Coleman Young, the mayor of Detroit, MI. He loved the idea and it was approved. Now it was time to get the word out about the program. It was something new, because most of the summer youth programs were clean-up programs for the youth around the City of Detroit. People hurried and put in their applications for the program. The word was out! If you had talent it was a plus, but if not, you could get in a workshop. It was something for everybody to come and learn. The teachers taught us how to be professionals. It was a right way and a wrong way to perform. Yes, it was hard work, but to be the best, you had to learn from the best. The program always was open for us to show improvement. To make the good better and to make the great, greater. This is the story of Kim Weston for the performing arts, our story, and our festival, to pass the dream on. We hope you will enjoy our story as much as we did.
