The Holladay Case
Royce, the junior partner of the Manhattan legal firm of Graham and Royce, arrives at the office with stunning news -- Frances Holladay has been accused of murdering her millionaire father, Hiram W. Holladay. Further, Rogers, Mr Holladay's confidential clerk, gives a statement that points to Miss Holladay as the only possible culprit. Mr Holladay had been a client of Graham & Royce's for over twenty years, and Royce, who is romantically interested in Miss Holladay and whose help she requests, immediately volunteers to represent her. But at the inquest, a certain point raised about Rogers casts doubt on her guilt and she is not formally charged with the crime. However, Miss Holladay's subsequent behavior is odd. She falls ill, replaces her faithful maid, draws a sizable amount of cash from her fortune -- then promptly disappears along with the new maid.
