Abnormal Children
"Abnormal Children", by Bernard Hollander, is a book for parents, teachers and medical officers of schools, dealing with the study of nervous, mischievous, precocious and backward young folk. The author treats in detail of the various forms and degrees of mental and moral deficiency occurring from infancy up to the ages of twenty-one as well as with the minor defects of mind and conduct. There are chapters on cause of abnormality, idiocy and imbecility, feeble-minded children, backward children, nervous disorders of children, insanity in childhood and adolescence, abnormal heads and their significance, and the moral education of the young. In concluding his preface the author wisely suggests some helpful preventive measures: "It is for the physician to note in their earliest state the symptoms which should put parents on their guard, to point out the causes of brain and mind failure, to show how to counteract the effects of evil heredity, bad environment, and disease, to advise what precautions can be taken, how to bring up such children, how to educate them, and what careers to choose for them to fit their capacities." The volume is illustrated with various specimen heads. --The Bookseller, Newsdealer and Stationer, Volume 46
