This volume stems from the idea that the notion of borders and borderlines as clear-cut frontiers separating not only political and geographical areas, but also cultural, linguistic and semiotic spaces, does not fully address the complexity of contemporary cultural encounters. Centering on a whole range of literary works from the United States and the Caribbean, the contributors suggest and discuss different theoretical and methodological grounds to address the literary production taking place across the lines in North American and Caribbean culture. The volume represents a pioneering attempt at proposing the concept of the border as a useful paradigm not only for the study of Chicano literature but also for the other American literatures. The works presented in the volume illustrate various aspects and manifestations of the textual border(lands), and explore the double-voiced discourse of border texts by writers like Harriet E. This book examines hospitality in American immigrant literature and culture, situating it at the crossroads of space and border theory, and exploring themes of migration, citizenship, identity formation, and spatiality. Assessing the conditions, duration, and shifting roles of hosts and guests in the US, it visits recent representations of immigrant spatiality, from the space of the body in film to the ways in which immigrants are incorporated into the US in a range of literary examples. Uncertain Mirrors realigns magical realism within a changing critical landscape, from Aristotelian mimesis to Adorno's concept of negative dialectics. In between, the volume traverses a vast theoretical arena, from postmodernism and postcolonialism to Lévinasian philosophy and eco-criticism. The volume opens and closes with dialectical instability, as it recasts the mutability of the term "mimesis" as both a "world-reflecting" and a "world-creating" mechanism. Magical realism, the authors contend, offers another stance of the possible; it also situates the reader at a hybrid aesthetic matrix inextricably linked to postcolonial theory, postmodernism, Bakhtinian theory, and quantum physics. As Uncertain Mirrors explores, magical realist texts partake of modernist exhaustion as much as of postmodernist replenishment, yet they stem from a different "location of culture" and "direction of culture;" they offer complex aesthetic artifacts that, in their recreation of alternative geographic and semiotic spaces, dislocate hegemonic texts and ideologies. Their unrealistic excess effects a breach in the totalized unity represented by 19th century realism, and plays the dissonant chord of the particular and the non-identical.

Occupying Space in American Literature and Culture inscribes itself within the spatial turn that permeates the ways we look at literary and cultural productions. The volume seeks to clarify the connections between race, space, class, and identity as it concentrates on different occupations and disoccupations, enclosures and boundaries. Space is scaled up and down, from the body, the ground zero of spatiality, to the texturology of Manhattan; from the striated place of the office in Melville’s "Bartleby, the Scrivener" on Wall Street, to the striated spaces of internment camps and reservations; from the lowest of the low, the (human) clutter that lined the streets of Albany, NY, during the Depression, to the new Towers of Babel that punctuate the contemporary architecture of transparencies. Este libro reúne una selección de los artículos de opinión publicados en EL PAÍS sobre el conflicto catalán entre el 11 de septiembre de 2012 y el 11 de septiembre de 2014. Las fechas elegidas tienen un valor simbólico (el periodo de dos años comprendido entre esas celebraciones de la Diada, la fiesta nacional de Cataluña), pero a la vez enmarcan la intensificación de un debate político que se ha reflejado en las páginas del periódico con las firmas de numerosos intelectuales. Los criterios de selección aplicados se basan en que los artículos trasciendan la actualidad inmediata de la fecha de publicación y en que no estén firmados por políticos, pues entendemos que su voz ya encuentra cada día amplios espacios en los medios de comunicación y que los ciudadanos conocen bien sus opiniones. No obstante, sí figura un interesantísimo diálogo entre Felipe González y Jordi Pujol (mantenido durante un acto que organizó EL PAÍS) que fue moderado por Javier Moreno. Se ha procurado asimismo evitar textos que puedan resultar repetitivos o demasiado coincidentes entre sí. No obstante, esas reiteraciones se producen en alguna ocasión, como consecuencia de los grandes grupos ideológicos en que cada autor se encuadra, voluntaria o involuntariamente. Finalmente, otros textos se han incluido o excluido con el criterio de buscar un cierto equilibrio que permita la presencia de todas las posturas, compatible con una extensión que no haga inmanejable este libro. El total de artículos disponibles sumaba 552, de los que se han escogido 163.

Muchas mujeres que se han dedicado a la ciencia, en particular a las matemáticas, son poco conocidas y reconocidas. Sin embargo, han realizado grandes aportaciones al álgebra, a la geometría o al cálculo, por citar algunas disciplinas.
