STAIRS of Success for Families
Current research suggests a gap exists in the clinical treatment of combat-related PTSD, as many interventions focus primarily on individual therapeutic techniques. The individual modalities often fail to address the impact PTSD has on the entire family system, as symptoms of PTSD (e.g., avoidance, emotional numbing) commonly lead to difficulties within interpersonal functioning. This project aimed to address this gap by advocating for family interventions to treat combat-related PTSD. Specifically, this project provides a manualized intervention for a family therapy group titled, STAIRs of Success for Families, to contribute to the small, but growing number of family interventions created for the treatment of combat-related PTSD. The intervention, STAIRs of Success for Families, is loosely based on the framework of Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) Narrative Therapy, originally designed for the treatment of childhood abuse. As STAIR Narrative Therapy focuses primarily on developing skills to modulate emotional experiencing and interpersonal relating, the framework can be beneficial for veterans with combat-related PTSD and their family members. This dissertation contains all necessary materials to implement STAIRs of Success for Families, including instruments designed to assess the effectiveness of the family intervention.
