David Sowell traces the history of artisan labor organizations in Bogotá and examines long-term political activity of Colombian artisans in the century after independence. Relying on contemporary newspapers, political handouts, broadsides, and public petitions, Sowell analyzes the economic, social, and political history of the capital's artisan class, a middling social sector with very significant social and political strengths. This is the first study in English of nineteenth-century Latin American artisans and one of the few treatments that spans the whole of nineteenth-century Colombian history.The rise and late decline of artisan class political activity coincided the Colombia's integration into the world market. Initially petitioning for tariff protection, Bogotá's craftsmen in time mobilized to address numerous issues, including industrial education, internal trade order, credit, and better health and educational facilities. Sowell traces the transformation of Colombia's economy and the (mainly negative) effects its evolution had on bogotano artisans. By the end of the nineteenth century, the artisans class was fragmented, their labor leadership replaced by workers associated with industrial production, transportation systems, and the production of coffee. For many OECD countries, how to ensure the safe and dignified return to their origin countries of migrants who do not have grounds to remain is a key question. Sustainable Reintegration of Returning Migrants: A Better Homecoming reports the results of a multi-country peer review project carried out by the OECD, with support from the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Africas: The Artist and the City contains a double affirmation. It corroborates the existence of another urban and artistic reality in Africa, and it asserts that these realities do not correspond with what stereotypes would have us see as Africa's sole reality. In the words of Pep Subiros, we should talk not of Africa but of Africas. Yet until now, there has been little said about the Africas depicted here, about urban centers like Dakar, Cape Town, and Abidjan that are undergoing urbanization and growth at breakneck speed. And what of the work of artists based in these cities -- artists like Akinbode Akinbiyi, Jane Alexander, Luis Basto, Willie Bester, Sokari Douglas Camp, Calvin Dondo, Godfried Donkor, Kan-Si, Bodys Isek Kingelez, Samuel Fosso, Moshekwa Langa, Santu Mofokeng, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Ousmane Dago Ndiaye, Eileen Perrier, Penny Siopis, and Patrice Felix Tchicaya? Africas: The Artist and the City aims to illustrate a moment in which a fertile collision is taking place between traditionand modernity, between the local and the global -- and to introduce the settings where this confluence is taking place.
