From symbolic exile to physical exile
This thoughtful study examines the routes of graduates of the Turkish Imam-Hatip schools to various European universities, especially those in Vienna and Sarajevo. Against the backdrop of a largely secular Turkish academic establishment, the Imam-Hatip students frequently choose Europe for their university education because they are excluded from the native universities by the countrys secular elites. This ambitious book contributes to the discussion of the role of these schools in the social mobility of the religious conservatives in Turkey.
