Dorothy Hackney Diary
The collection includes a line-a-day diary of Dorothy Hackney kept while she lived in Providence and Dobbs Ferry, New York during the years of the First World War. The diary represents the musings and activities of a young female student from an upper class family who lived on the East Side of Providence. Prominent Providence families are mentioned throughout the years such as Chapin, Herreshoff, Allen and Rathbun. The bulk of the diary describes her social life, school, friends and experience as part of the war effort including her volunteer work for the French Wounded and the Red Cross.
