Abstract: This hearing discusses legislation to amend the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to revise the authority under that act to regulate pesticide chemical residues in food. The legislation is intended to enhance federal oversight of the use of dangerous pesticides in the nation's food supply and provide greater assurance that the foods we eat are safe. Testimony was received from government officials (Dept. of Health and Human Services, Environmental Protection Agency, Dept. of Agricualture), environmentalists, industry representatives, and several scientists. This document includes reprinted materials on the topic of pesticides and food safety.

The fourth edition of the Food Chemicals Codex is the culmination of efforts of the many members, past and present, of the Committee on Food Chemicals Codes (FCC). The current committee, formed in the fall of 1992 at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has brought all these efforts to fruition with this edition.
