The Métis people are one of Canada's three Aboriginal groups. While the characteristics of North American Indians and Inuit are relatively well documented, little is known about the Métis. Based on the 1991 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, this report provides an overview of the population who identify with the Métis. It analyzes the socio-economic situation of the Métis in terms of their demographic characteristics, family status, culture, education, labour force characteristics, income, housing and health. For purposes of comparison, informations are also provided for the non-Aboriginal, North American Indian and Inuit populations.

The Area Profile Series gives a statistical overview, or profile, of geographic areas. A wide range of census variables are covered in limited detail. The Profile Series consists of data based on a 20% sample except for age, sex and marital status which are obtained on a 100% basis. New in 1996 Area Profiles can be accessed much earlier than in 1991. Components of the profile are available as each variable is released. From October 1997 to July 1998, data at the CD CSD level will be available on the day of release of a variable with all other geographic levels for this variable available one month later. The CD-ROM containing all area profiles will be available in 3rd Quarter of 1998 and the publications for CD/CSD and CT levels will be available in the first Quarter of 1999.
