20th Century Firefighting
Resilience is that inexpressible quality that allows people to be knocked down by hardship, move through it, and come back from the ashes stronger than before. In the 20th century, William Hicks and his fellow firefighters in Massachusetts knew the meaning of resilience, too. Through his illustrations, Hicks offers a glimpse into the lives of the men he worked with. His sketches depict the camaraderie that formed between these men during their service as firemen between the years of 1899 to 1942. They offer an insider's perspective of the calls that these firemen responded to, the perils of rescues they performed, and the changing times both within the department and in the world around it. This story is about resilience; an essential quality of so many firefighters and their families.
