William Carlos Williams's place among the great poets of our century is firmly established. Three brothers, Thomas (born 1823), Richard (born 1839), and Francis, sons of Thomas Crowther (1797-1871) and Ann Preece (1800-1846) and a cousin, George (1826-1895), joined the L.D.S. Church in Shropshire, England. They then immigrated to Utah. Descendants lived in Colorado, Utah, Alberta, and elsewhere.

Howells is known to be the father of American realism, and a denouncer of the sentimental novel. He was the first American author to bring a realist aesthetic to the literature of the United States. His stories of Boston upper crust life set in the 1850s are highly regarded among scholars of American fiction.
